In October 2015, South Africa will become the sixth country, and the first in Africa, to host the International Renewable Energy Conference (IREC). Convened by the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), IREC is a high-level political conference series hosted by a national government. Previous hosts include: Bonn, Germany (2004), Beijing, China (2005), Washington, USA (2008), Delhi, India (2010), Abu Dhabi, UAE (2013).

SAIREC 2015 provides a global platform for government ministers, high-level decision makers, experts, specialists and thought leaders, as well as private sector players and civil society, to discuss and exchange their vision, experiences and solutions to accelerate the global scale-up of renewable energy.

Hosted by the South African Department of Energy together with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), under the theme RE-energising Africa, SAIREC will demonstrate why Africa is the business destination for the renewables energy sector given its current growth trajectory and need for investment in clean energy to underpin sustainable economic growth.

Registration deadline is 25 September 2015.

SAIREC 2015 is open to all and there is no registration fee, however, you do need to register to gain access to the venue.

UCT DataFirst / SALDRU short courses

Working closely with StatsSA, the University of Cape Town's SALDRU and DataFirst have developed a number of short courses. The courses are targeted at researchers, postgraduate students and analysts.

DataFirst is a data service dedicated to making South African and other African survey and administrative microdata available to researchers and policy analysts. DataFirst promote high quality research by providing the essential research infrastructure for discovering and accessing data and by developing skills among prospective users, particularly in South Africa. They undertake research on the quality and usability of national data and encourage data usage and data sharing.

The Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) was founded in 1975, and is based in the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town. The unit carries out research in applied empirical microeconomics with an emphasis on labour markets, human capital, poverty, inequality and social policy.

Further information about the course aims, content and prerequisites can be found in the attached short course programme.
