A learning network meeting was held in Gauteng on 20 and 21 June 2012. The Johannesburg Development Agency was the host of the Learning Network meeting. Inputs were sought from members about local and international research needs which could be supported by the ERLN and the needs for a Technology Platform for the ERLN. There were presentations and discussions on the Gautrain, Rea Vaya Bus Rapid transit infrastructure and the aerotropolis.
An update was given on the business climate index that the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership was developing and the possibility of a Leadership in Regional Economic Development course was introduced to members. A world café engagement was held, where the following themes were explored by participants: Funding, Implementation, Alignment, Research, Economic Planning and Blue Sky thinking. In the evening, a short address was given by a property developer. On day two there were presentations about transit hubs and site visits to Rea Vaya infrastructure and service on trunk route 1A (Johannesburg inner city to Soweto), Orlando East Station Precinct (a mass transit interchange) and Vilakazi Street Precinct (a heritage node). The meeting ended with a networking lunch in Vilakazi Street, Soweto.
